Seven Stages of Fantasy Grief

Writer's picture: JPhilly ThaKidJPhilly ThaKid

Life is complicated. There are highs and there are lows. The most common quote to reflect this is “ you win some, you lose some” but let's be real, you only hear this quote when you lose. Losing stinks, it is the worst feeling in the world. You want that victory, that feeling of accomplishment but instead you just die inside. The worst feeling of loss is of course Fantasy Sports. Nothing stings more than taking the L in a match you should’ve won or in the most ferocious beat down. So what is it like to lose in Fantasy Sports? We begin the analysis.

First we ask ourselves, what are the stages of grief? Death has 7 stages: Shock, Pain, Guilt, Anger, Bargaining, Acceptance and Hope. Now there is no doubt you will experience this in your life but Fantasy Sports has a little more to it. This Fantasy life isn’t for everybody, it’s for the strongest, it’s for the people who can get socked in the jaw, stand up and say “ Infants hit harder than you” and proceed to ask for more! The Stages of Fantasy Grief reflect this notion in the simplest of terms:

So what are the stages of Fantasy Grief you ask? Some of you are saying “ Well aren't they the same??”. They are not the same, they can never be the same. Hope? Acceptance? Bargaining? Who the hell does that in Fantasy? But you’ve been waiting for the stages at this point so here they are: Bullshit, Pain, Anguish, Disbelief, Negativity, Acceptance of having a garbage team, and then more Bullshit. Pain is the feeling after seeing that final score of the game that could’ve won it for you and Anguish is the stew you are in of all the misery. Disbelief is when you started a surefire 20+ point player only for them to drop a measly 7 points. Negativity, no happy thoughts, no hope, no optimism, the world is grey. By this time, you have realized that your team is a landfill of sadness that can only get worse thereby Accepting your garbage team. Finally after going through all these emotions and holding the L, you just think “........man this some bullshit” coming back to the first step.

I know I've been bringing the negative vibes to this article. I haven’t really “encouraged” a winner’s mentality, quite the opposite actually. But look at the Spongebob picture and ask yourself: is there a number of times I have to be taught? HELL NO! YOU CAN’T TEACH THIS OLD DOG NEW TRICKS, I AIN’T LEARNING HOW TO QUIT! WHAT YOU THINK THIS IS? I’M A DEGENERATE, I’LL LOSE $500 ONE WEEK AND LOSE $1,000 THE NEXT! THIS IS THE LIFE!
