Impact of Devonta Freeman - 2020 Fantasy Football

Writer's picture: BillyFFDBillyFFD

About an hour after I posted the Waiver Wire Madness article, Devonta Freeman agreed to terms with the New York Football Giants. Put a damper on the article, maybe I should be more like my co-host Mike and procrastinate my day away. My Dion Lewis take has turned out to be completely useless in the long run. More importantly, we need to dive in and figure out what kind of production we can expect for Freeman for the rest of the season.

In 2019, we wouldn’t consider Freeman to be particularly efficient on the ground. He rushed for 656 yards, just two touchdowns on 184 attempts for 3.6 yards per carry. He averaged 77 yards from scrimmage a game last year as well. Where he brings value to the Giants would be in his ability to catch the ball, averaging 3.3 receptions per game for just under 30 yards for his career. Freeman has historically been very good in short yardage situations. Freeman has the ability to handle a full workload, although he has been plagued with injuries every year but 2016.

For argument's sake, let's say Freeman is used in a similar role as Saquon has been, you could expect a big season moving forward for him. Saquon was projected to have 85 targets out of the backfield and close to 300 touches on the ground. Realistically, Freeman could see closer to 50 targets, which would still make him a valuable fantasy asset, and at least a low end RB2. Only time will tell how he will actually be used, as he could see passing down work be vulture from Dion Lewis especially early on. For me, Freeman is a stash this week so we can see what kind of shape he is in and what his usage will be. Every win counts in fantasy football, especially early on in the season, because lets face it 2-1 feels a whole lot better than 1-2.
