Waiver Wire Madness - Week 5

Writer's picture: BillyFFDBillyFFD

Another NFL week gone by, and another group of players emerge that we need to run to the Waiver Wire for. Injuries to starters, breakout players we have been waiting for, and a few streaming options for Week 5. We also may have found an end to you TE and QB streaming woes. All this and more on this week's edition of Waiver Wire Madness!

Kenneth Gainwell - 44% owned

I hate to say i told you so, but I told you so. It was only a matter of time before Kenneth Gainwell would emerge as the most talented RB on the Eagles. Jalen Hurts has no need to hand the ball off to a RB, he only needs one to throw to. Kenneth Gainwell was a breakout waiting to happen in 2021. Miles Sanders only has 3 more carries than Hurts, but 57 less yards with those carries. Gainwell has the 3rd most receptions on the Eagles on only 18 targets, and is averaging 8.8 yards per reception. He exploded for 20 fantasy points this week, and If the eagles keep losing he will continue to be on the field more and more as the year goes on.

Sam Darnold - 44% owned

SAM DARNOLD BREAKOUT SEASON IS UPON US! If you were to tell me before the season started that Darnold would be leading the NFL in Rushing TDs through 4 Weeks, I’d call you crazy. Sammy Smooches is throwing and running his way into the top 10 QB conversation in fantasy football for the remainder of the season. We spoke last week about how good he has been, but if you chose to ignore him last week, there is no way you can do the same this week. Darnold put up 302 passing yards, 35 rushing yards and 4 total TDs against the Dallas defense in Week 4.

Damien Williams - 14% owned

With the injury to David Montgomery, Damien Williams will be at the top of the list for most waiver wire pickups for Week 5. Personally, I am not high on him as it will be a short replacement for Montgomery. If you are the Montgomery owner, it makes much more sense to me, but if you are not I wouldn’t go wild trying to get a 31 year old RB on a roster that is coached by Matt “Garbage Can” Nagy. Is there value there for a short term start? Absolutely. Is it worth using your top waiver or a big chunk of your FAAB dollars for? Probably not. I will say he looked good vs the Lions for whatever thats worth, putting up a modest 55 yards and a TD on 8 carries.

Dawson Knox - 50% owned

Dawson Knox is getting way more work in the passing game early on in the season than I thought he would. He honestly should have been added to last week's article as a streamer option, but sometimes I don’t see everything by Monday night. I made up for it by the weekend by putting him into my DFS article, but that doesn’t help your fantasy teams. He has been a safety blanket for Josh Allen in the red zone, with 4 TDs on the season. Through 4 games, Knox has 20 targets, bringing in 15 of them for 144 yards. It looks like this high powered offense will be looking to use the tight end more than anybody thought, scoop him up while you still can after the big game.

AJ Green - 38% owned

AJ Green was a stud WR back in the day when half of you were still playing in 8 team leagues. Turns out, he’s still got it. Lining up opposite of one of the best WRs in the league in DHop has really allowed him to get open in the way he hasn’t before. AJ Green has 15 receptons for 245 yards and 2 TDs on the season, to put it bluntly, he should be owned in every league. Cardinals can throw the ball on any defense and if Kyler continues to have the MVP type year, AJ Green could be a flex option as we head into bye weeks.

Kadarius Toney - 12% owned

Is this the week that Toney breaks out? There couldn’t be a better option for the rookie as they head into the House That Jerry Built. Dallas has given up 28 fantasy points per game to WRs this year, and the Giants WR core are highly depleted to start the season. Toney had 6 receptions for 78 yards vs a tough Saints secondary in Week 4 but Dallas is a whole different kind of bad in the back end of the defense. Toney could be a great streaming option as a flex play if your team is starting to get the injury bug, or if you don’t listen to our advice and your team is flat out bad.

Jonnu Smith -40% owned

If you need a streaming TE and can’t get your hands on the usual suspects, Jonnu Smith may be your best bet. The Patriots go head to head vs a Houston Texans team that has given up 12 fantasy points per game to the TE position which is 2nd worst in the NFL. Smith found the endzone on a play action pass where he was WIDE open during SNF. If you are a part of the TE streaming community, Jonnu is a solid option headed into Week 5.
